Cloud vs on-premise servers for Indian businesses
For email, files and collaboration, cloud has won and keeping those on a local server is now hard to justify. For applications with heavy local data access, latency-sensitive operations, or a vendor who only supports on-premise, a local server is still correct. Most Indian businesses end up hybrid, and that is a legitimate destination rather than a failure to finish a migration.

Keep it on-premise if
- Your application vendor only supports on-premise deployment, which is still common in manufacturing, healthcare and specialist practice software.
- The workload moves large volumes of data locally, such as design files, video editing or laboratory output, where pulling it over a link would be slower and more expensive.
- Your connectivity is genuinely unreliable and a second link is not available at the site.
Move to cloud if
- The workload is email, files, collaboration or identity. These are better in cloud now by almost every measure.
- Your server is approaching refresh and you are deciding whether to buy another one. That is the natural decision point.
- Your team is hybrid or distributed and VPN has become the thing everyone complains about.
The hybrid position
- Identity, email, files and collaboration in Microsoft 365. Line-of-business applications with local data on a server that stays. Backup covering both, tested. That is where most mid-market Indian businesses land, and it is a stable destination rather than a halfway house.
When the other option is right
Cloud is not automatically cheaper, and providers who imply it is are not being straight. It changes cost from capital to operating and removes a category of risk you would otherwise carry, both of which are usually worth paying for. But a lift-and-shift of a badly designed application into cloud produces a badly designed application with a monthly bill.
How to make the decision concretely
- List each workload separately with its data volume and who needs to reach it. The answer is almost never the same for all of them, which is why a blanket decision usually disappoints.
- Check what your application vendors actually support. A vendor who only certifies on-premise deployment settles that workload immediately.
- Test your internet link honestly, including at the busiest hour rather than at nine in the morning. Cloud makes connectivity a single point of failure, so a second link is part of the cost.
- Time your decision to the hardware refresh. Deciding when a server is due for replacement is far cheaper than migrating a server you have just bought.
- Budget backup for cloud data as a separate line. It is not included, and assuming it is remains the most common cloud mistake we find.
