Managing Macs in an Indian business: the complete 2026 guide

If your business has more than a handful of Macs and no formal way of managing them, the short answer is this: register with Apple Business Manager, connect it to a mobile device management (MDM) platform, enrol every Mac, and apply a security baseline. Everything else in Mac management builds on those four steps. This guide walks through each one, in the order an Indian business should actually do them.

Why Macs need managing at all

Macs have a reputation for looking after themselves, and it is partly earned. macOS ships with disk encryption, a malware scanner, a firewall and sensible defaults. What it does not ship with is any way for your business to prove those protections are on, to install your applications, to enforce your policies, or to recover a device when someone leaves. That is the gap management fills.

The pattern we see across Hyderabad and Bengaluru is consistent: Macs arrive one at a time, usually for designers, developers and founders. Each is set up by hand with a personal Apple Account. Two years later there are forty of them, nobody knows which ones are encrypted, and an exiting employee's personal account has Activation Lock on a company laptop. None of that is hard to prevent. All of it is tedious to fix afterwards.

Step 1: Apple Business Manager

Apple Business Manager (ABM) is Apple's free web portal for organisations. It does three things that matter: it records which devices your organisation owns, it lets you buy and assign apps in volume, and it lets you create Managed Apple Accounts that belong to the business rather than to individuals.

Registration needs a D-U-N-S number, which most registered Indian companies either already have or can obtain at no cost. Once enrolled, devices bought through Apple or through participating authorised resellers in India appear in ABM automatically. Devices bought elsewhere, including older machines you already own, can be added manually with Apple Configurator. Step 2: choose and connect an MDM

ABM records ownership; an MDM platform actually manages the devices. For Apple fleets the realistic choices are Jamf, which is Apple-only and the deepest option, and Microsoft Intune, which makes sense when Macs are a minority inside a Microsoft 365 estate. Whichever you choose, the connection to ABM is what enables automated enrolment: a Mac assigned to your MDM in ABM configures itself as a company device the first time it is switched on, before it ever reaches the user's desk.

Step 3: enrol everything

New Macs enrol automatically through ABM. Existing Macs need a one-time enrolment, which can be done remotely with a download link or in person. The goal is simple: no company Mac outside management. A partially enrolled fleet gives you confident answers about some devices and guesses about the rest, and the unmanaged ones are always the ones that end up mattering.

Step 4: apply a security baseline

Once Macs are enrolled, the baseline takes minutes to push and covers the controls an auditor or a customer security questionnaire will ask about:

• FileVault disk encryption on, with recovery keys escrowed to the MDM rather than written on sticky notes
• Firewall enabled and Gatekeeper left at its defaults, so unsigned software cannot run silently
• A screen lock policy with a sensible timeout
• Software updates enforced with deadlines rather than left to user goodwill
• Activation Lock under company control, so a departing employee cannot lock a device you own

With the foundations in place, the day-two work begins. Apps and Books in ABM lets you buy App Store apps in volume and push them silently, no Apple Account needed on the device. Non-App-Store software, which is most business software on the Mac, deploys through the MDM as packages. Identity is worth doing properly too: Macs can sign in with Microsoft Entra ID credentials through Platform SSO, which ends the separate-Mac-password problem.

Ongoing operations are mostly about patching and lifecycle. macOS updates arrive frequently and can be enforced with declarative management so devices update by a deadline. When someone leaves, the MDM wipes or locks the device remotely and Activation Lock is released because the business, not the person, controls it. When a device is lost in a cab between the airport and Gachibowli, you mark it lost and it is a brick to whoever has it.

What this looks like at Indian scale

A 30-Mac creative agency and a 300-Mac product company need the same architecture, just different amounts of it. The agency can run a lightweight MDM with a monthly review. Common mistakes to avoid

The failures we get called in to fix are rarely exotic. They are the same five patterns:

• Registering ABM against an individual employee's details instead of the legal entity, which turns into an ownership headache the day that person leaves
• Enrolling devices and then enforcing nothing, so the console shows a healthy fleet while encryption and updates remain optional in practice
• Treating employee-owned Macs like company ones, which breeds resentment, or company Macs like personal ones, which breeds risk
• Buying from unlinked channels and losing automated enrolment for every new device
• Leaving the whole setup in one administrator's head, with no documentation and no second admin account

Frequently asked questions

Do we need Apple Business Manager if we only have ten Macs?

Yes, and it costs nothing. Even at ten devices, ABM gives you automated enrolment for new purchases, volume app licensing and company-owned Apple Accounts. The effort to register is a few hours once; the alternative is hand-configuring every device forever.

Can we manage Macs with the Microsoft tools we already have?

How long does it take to bring an unmanaged fleet under control?
